My Parents' First Visit!

In about 7 hours, the two people who brought me into this world will be landing in Portland, Oregon for the very first time. I’ve lived here for 3¾ years and they have yet to see the city I like to call home. Since they don’t travel too far from the East coast, this is kind of a big deal. I had to plead with them last Christmas - “No presents dammit, buy a plane ticket!”

I admit that I don’t have the greatest relationship with my parents, but I love them very much. They don’t always approve of or understand the choices I make. Thus, any familial event tends to be sometimes stressful and awkward. If they had it their way I’d be running the family business (Roseland Bowl) in Canandaigua, NY and well on my way to starting a family of my own. Knowing where they come from I understand why they want that for me - it’s all they know. So, I really want to show them that their Golden Child is happy and doing well.

I have a great gang of friends and coworkers, a good job where at times I feel like I get paid for acting like a complete idiot in a city that continues to surprise me. Who cares if I haven’t had a girlfriend in a long long time, that’s all gotta count for something, right!?

So why am I on the verge of a panic attack? I think that’s just how I deal with family. I’ll survive, I’m just extremely on edge right now and I apologize in advance if I snap at anyone over the next few days. Love you Mom and Dad! :)

I’ve got a little more than 3 days to show them what this lovely city has given me. Here are the options I’ve got on tap: The Gorge, Bonneville Dam, a drive to the coast, rose gardens, chinese garden, the zoo, Powells, Saturday Market and lots of FOOD!

Oh and they’re staying with me in my one-bedroom apartment, so Golden Boy gets the couch! HA! Wish me luck. I’ll report back next week with the results ;)
